Hydrogen Water – Get smart with the water you drink

What is hydrogen water?

Water consists of a bond between 2 hydrogen (H2) and an Oxygen atom. How hydrogen rich the water you are drinking depends on the amount of Hydrogen gas (H2) that is dissolved or liberated from your water. Hydrogen only consists of 0.000055% of the air we breathe and 99% of what we consume have little or close to Zero hydrogen content.

Why does our food / drink have such low hydrogen content?

Hydrogen is the lightest and smallest element on the planet. Due to its small size, hydrogen escapes rapidly into the air thus; hydrogen water is best consumed when it is freshly produced.

Why drink hydrogen water?

Scientific research has been carried out to study the effects of hydrogen water on various human conditions. Here’s an overview of some of the significant findings.

Diabetes type 2 & impaired glucose tolerance

A study on 36 patients where half were provided with 0.9L/day of hydrogen rich water and others were provided with the same amount of placebo pure water for 8 weeks. Those who consumed hydrogen rich water experienced improved glucose metabolism.


A This study evaluated the effects of drinking hydrogen rich water on 49 patients receiving radiotherapy for malignant liver tumours for 6 weeks. Results showed that hydrogen rich water played a protective role by reducing the side-effects of radiotherapy and improving the quality of life for many patients.

How are oxidants formed ?

A Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated inside the body during daily life as a product of energy metabolism. External factors contribute to ROS such as smoking, air pollution, exposure to ultraviolet or irradiation rays, intense exercise, and physical or psychological stress. Chronic oxidative stress exposure is directly related to many inflammatory, neurodegenerative, aging and malignant diseases.

Antioxidant water

In 2007, scientists discovered that hydrogen was a potent antioxidant that reduces harmful oxidants such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) to protect cells against oxidative stress. Since then, a large number of studies have explored therapeutic and preventive effects of hydrogen. These publications cover many biological effects against oxidative stress in almost all organs. Moreover, hydrogen has been discovered to play key roles in energy metabolism, anti-inflammatory, antiapoptotic and antiallergic effects.

Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM)

Most hydrophilic (water based) and hydrophobic (oil based) antioxidants cannot penetrate biomembranes and diffuse into critical cell components as shown in the illustration below. In contrast, hydrogen can diffuse unhindered through cells to prevent oxidative damage at key areas (e.g. blood brain barrier). The therapeutic success of hydrogen against oxidative stress related diseases highlights the advantage of hydrogen over regular antioxidants.

Most hydrophilic compounds are retained at membranes and cannot reach the cytosol, whereas most hydrophobic ones cannot penetrate biomembranes in the absence of specific carriers. In contrast, H2 can be rapidly distributed into cytosol and organelles.

But is it safe?

Unlike other gases, hydrogen is nontoxic to humans and animals even at high concentrations. The safety of Hydrogen has been demonstrated by deep water divers that utilises breathing gas mixture of 49% hydrogen, 50% helium and 1% oxygen to protect them from decompression sickness.
